Universal Design for Learning makes the assumption that the purpose of education is to develop expert learners. Just like this dog is an expert at self-control, patiently waiting, the goal of UDL is for every learner to develop expert skills in learning. 

 

Expert learners are:

• Purposeful and motivated

• Resourceful and knowledgeable

• Strategic and goal directed

 

Imagine if we let students know about this goal, and then designed learning to help them develop the skills needed to reach this goal. Powerful.
